How We Create Natural, Biodegradable Funeral Casket Flowers

Our funeral flower arrangements are designed to be as thoughtful as they are beautiful. Each one is entirely biodegradable, made with seasonal, British-grown flowers and foliage, and created with care here on our flower farm in South Central England. These tributes offer a softer, more personal alternative to traditional funeral flowers—rooted in the seasons and designed to return gently to the earth.

A Natural Foundation

Every arrangement starts with a willow base, hand-woven by a local craftsperson. These frames provide the structure for the flowers while sitting discreetly on palm leaf trays that prevent any moisture from reaching the surface beneath. We don’t use floral foam—instead, the base is padded generously with sustainably sourced moss from Wales. Bound securely with twine, the moss keeps the flowers hydrated while allowing everything to biodegrade naturally over time.

British-Grown Flowers in Every Season

With the base prepared, we begin adding foliage and flowers. We use what’s growing in our fields whenever possible—fragrant herbs like rosemary for remembrance, seneccio and ivy form a green base, into which we nestle an array of flowers, hand cut from the flower field. The flowers are all 100% British-grown, mostly our own, and chosen to reflect the character of the person being honoured and the time of year. We work closely with the family to follow a colour palette and create a tribute that feels right, whether that’s soft and subtle or full of joyful colour.

Designed with Meaning

We’re often asked to include personal touches—something that tells a story. That might be a favourite stem, a branch from a family garden, or something symbolic tucked quietly into the arrangement. We can also add kokedama (moss-wrapped plants), which can be removed after the service and replanted as a living memory. Sometimes we scatter seeds into the moss, so new life can grow in the months to come.

For families who want to repurpose the flowers, we can incorporate glass vases into the design. These are nestled within the moss and filled with individual posies. After the service, the vases can be removed and taken home or shared with guests—used to decorate the wake venue or kept as a gentle reminder.

Sustainable, Compostable, and Kind to the Earth

Once the service is over, the arrangement can be left at a graveside, displayed at the wake, or taken home to be composted. It will break down naturally—there’s nothing synthetic or wasteful. Just flowers, moss, string, and willow.

These casket toppers aren’t just for natural burials—they’re designed as a considered alternative to traditional funeral flowers. Made entirely without floral foam and using only British-grown, seasonal stems, they offer a gentle, beautiful way to say goodbye.
